How to be Heard

Public participation in the Federal Environmental Review process for Proposed Site 1251 at Port Mouton Island created the largest file on any aquaculture site in Canada. Every letter counted! Citizen voices helped us to get heard and to successfully prevent a second farm being licensed.

The Bay needs to recover from the impact of 15 years of salmon farm waste. The harbour around Spectacle Island used to be a prime lobster fishing area. Fishermen now call it "the dead zone". Scallop beds, clams and mussels are no longer present.

Friends of Port Mouton Bay's Science Team has partnered with Dalhousie University to monitor a long term recovery of the seabed at Spectacle Island. Cooke Aquaculture, the current owner of the Spectacle Island site (#835), has agreed to fallow the site for a period of three years. Read more about our discussions with Cooke Aquaculture

While we study the site recovery during the fallow period, Friends of Port Mouton Bay remains opposed to open cage fish farming in the Bay. And we continue to publicly advocate against the re-establishment of active fish farming in the Bay.
